About Calculator Toolkit — Restaurant Tip and Bill Split Calculator
A small set of calculators built around the awkward part of paying a restaurant bill, which is that the arithmetic is easy but the basis is not. Tip before or after tax, whether a service charge already covers it, how a discount changes the figure. This handles each of those as a separate input rather than assuming one convention.
You enter the subtotal, say how tax appears on your receipt, subtract a discount if one applies, and include a service charge if the restaurant added one. The tip percentage is then applied to whichever basis you chose, and the result is shown with each layer named so you can see where the number came from rather than trusting a single total. Two related calculators cover tip with tax and splitting a completed bill across a group.
Everything runs locally in the browser. Nothing is uploaded, no account is required, and there is no signup wall in front of the tool.
The site is maintained by Leon Reed and carries a last-reviewed date on the page, which is more accountability than free calculator sites usually offer. The FAQ is refreshingly plain about ambiguity, noting that US diners commonly tip on the pre-tax subtotal while some receipts and payment terminals use an after-tax basis, and that a service charge does not always replace the tip.
Two things to know. This is a small, focused site rather than a broad calculator suite, so if you need anything beyond restaurant bills you will be looking elsewhere. And the tool is explicitly an estimator, not a substitute for the printed receipt, so verify against the bill and local tax rules before paying.
